AC Not Keeping Up? Don’t Sweat It—Try These Quick Checks Before You Call for Service

As Charleston temperatures climb, even a well-maintained AC can struggle to keep up. Before you schedule a service call, try these simple, do-it-yourself checks to help your system perform better—and possibly save on cooling costs. If after these steps your home still isn’t as cool as you’d like, give us a call at 843-270-9136. We’re here to help!

1. Check and Replace the Air Filter

A clean filter is the first line of defense for proper airflow and system health.

Why it matters: A clogged filter restricts airflow, forcing your AC to work harder and deliver less cool air.

What to do: Locate your return-air filter—often behind a vent grille or in the blower compartment. Inspect it: if it looks dark or dusty, replace it. Aim to swap filters every 1–3 months, depending on usage and household conditions (pets, dust, etc.).

Tip: Consider setting a reminder on your calendar or smartphone so you don’t forget this simple but crucial step.

2. Ensure Vents & Registers Are Open and Unblocked

Blocked vents can create uneven cooling and added strain on your system.

Why it matters: Closed or obstructed vents force air pressure to build in certain ducts, reducing overall comfort and making the AC less effective.

What to do: Walk through each room and confirm all supply and return registers are fully open. Move furniture, curtains, or rugs that might be blocking airflow. Even small obstructions can affect performance.

Tip: If you notice certain rooms still feel warmer, try adjusting nearby vents slightly to balance airflow throughout the house.

3. Inspect Attic Insulation

In hot weather, an under-insulated attic can allow extreme heat to radiate into living spaces.

Why it matters: Attic temperatures can soar well above outdoor temperatures. Without adequate insulation, that heat seeps downstairs, forcing your AC to run longer.

What to do: If you have safe access to your attic, check insulation depth. For Charleston homes, aim for at least an R-38 level (roughly 10–14 inches of fiberglass batts or equivalent blown-in insulation). Also look for gaps around attic hatches, recessed lights, or plumbing vents and seal them with weatherstripping or foam.

Tip: If you’re unsure about R-value or inspecting safely, consider an energy audit or professional insulation assessment. Improving attic insulation can pay off through lower cooling bills and increased comfort.

4. Use Thermal or Blackout Curtains

Blocking solar heat gain can help your AC maintain a comfortable temperature more easily.

Why it matters: Sunlight streaming through windows can add significant heat load, especially during peak sun hours (late morning through mid-afternoon).

What to do: Install thermal or blackout curtains on south- and west-facing windows. Close them during the hottest parts of the day to keep heat out. For best results, choose curtains that fit close to the window frame and reach the floor or sill to minimize gaps.

Tip: During cooler mornings or evenings, open curtains to let in natural light and fresh air when outdoor temperatures are lower.

When to Call the Pros

If you’ve completed these checks and your AC still isn’t keeping up—strange noises persist, airflow feels weak, or cooling is uneven—it’s time for a professional inspection. We can:

  • Verify refrigerant levels and system pressures
  • Clean and inspect the condenser coil
  • Check ductwork for leaks or obstructions
  • Evaluate overall system performance and recommend solutions
